GPON (an abbreviation for Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network) is a modern technology for data transmission over fiber-optic cable. The first letter "G" stands for "gigabit" and indicates that the total capacity of such a network can be up to 2.5 Gbps. The abbreviation PON itself stands for "passive optical network," meaning a network where the minimum amount of additional equipment is used between client equipment and the provider.
Signal Speed. As mentioned earlier, the throughput of GPON can be up to 2.5 Gbps, while in copper cables, such as the "twisted pair," it is typically 100 Mbps, which is 25 times less. This makes GPON an ideal choice for high-quality transmission of large data volumes. The high speed in GPON is achieved by using light to transmit the signal, while copper cable transmits an electrical signal. This allows multiple high-load devices to be connected to the Internet simultaneously.
Signal Reliability. The electrical signal in a copper cable can attenuate from the slightest damage to the cable or simply when transmitted over a distance of more than 100 meters, requiring additional devices to amplify the signal. In addition, copper cable is vulnerable to external electromagnetic radiation from other devices, and the signal can be intercepted unnoticed if external equipment is connected to the cable, meaning less security.
In contrast, GPON network has none of these drawbacks. It is immune to electromagnetic radiation or weather conditions, including storms. It is impossible to install external equipment to intercept the signal, providing higher security. As mentioned at the beginning, the minimum amount of additional equipment is used between client equipment and the provider, and it does not go out of order and does not require electrical power.
Transmission Radius. The optical GPON network can transmit data up to a distance of 20 km, allowing coverage of a large area from a single node.
Scalability. GPON allows easy network expansion by adding new clients or using new connections. Along with high signal reliability, this reduces costs for network maintenance and support.
One Cable for Multiple Services. In addition to home or office Internet, on the same single GPON cable, a subscriber can also receive other services from the provider, such as digital television, IP intercom, video surveillance, etc. This eliminates the need to run multiple separate cables to premises or offices.
Independence from the Power Grid. Thanks to GPON technology, through which we connect the majority of new subscribers, and also because all our nodes are equipped with powerful batteries and generators, Internet access for subscribers will remain even during a prolonged power outage in the city. However, the subscriber needs to ensure the availability of an alternative power source for their Wi-Fi router and the charging of smartphones or laptops.
Environmental Impact. GPON consumes less energy than traditional data transmission technologies, reducing its environmental impact. In addition, the technology does not contain environmentally hazardous substances such as lead or mercury.
